Anthony (Tony)'s Story

As of 26 December, 2008: If you remember me, I hope you'll contact me at anthonycolantuono at yahoo dot com and we can go from there. So without further ado, here's my story and I'm sticking to it... I recently retired from the Army after 22 years and now work for Raytheon Corp. as a Live Fire Planner. So that means that I still get to work with Soldiers but now I don't get to shoot guns anymore...bummer!! Anyways, the job pays well and will allow us to see a lot more of Europe and hopefully some of Asia. Retirement was scary to say the least and there were days when I was not sure if I had a job or not but I have faith in God and he looks out for children and fools (I know I am no kid!!) and he blessed me and the wife with this job. So yeah, overall life turned out very well for my wife and me. We both like to say that the biggest sign of our success is the three graduation tassels we have hanging on the mirror of our truck! All of our kids are out of the casa and nowadays we spend a lot of time out with friends our age and with empty nests as well. It's funny how after so many years of rushing through dinner to get back and take the babysitter home, we don't have to do that anymore and it really is relaxing. It's nice to be able to spend time with my girl but the best part of all is that we found out that our kids are not the string that held us together all these years, rather it was our love and committment to each other. Once the house was quiet and we had no one else to talk to when we were at home, it just sort of happened that we fell in love all over again just like when we were young. Ain't life funny? Now for our family... We have a daughter Veronica (25) that was born as I was going into 10th grade at Bassett. She's now married (to a Soldier), has two kids of her own (Adrianna is 3 1/2 and Roberto is 1 1/2) and they all live in Germany, about an hour from us. Currently, my son in law is deployed on his thrid tour to Iraq . Our oldest son, Anthony Jr is 20, a student at Howard College in Texas and plans to become a Teacher, maybe a writer, but surely he will be a success. He's one of those kids that is real smart but doesn't want people to know it because then they will expect him to be smart all the time. Our youngest son is Ceasare, 19. He finished his Army schooling and is now at Fort Bliss, TX. He is a cook but who knows what the Army will have him doing when he deploys (most likely by this summer). He is the serious one, loves kids and is not embarassed to help out with them no matter where he is or who he is with. My family all still live in the L.A. area but my Mom lives in the San Bernardino area. We go home once in a blue moon but the air in Cali makes me sick now and I lost a lot of my street smarts being a soldier for so long. So I sometimes think I am better off not going back at all, except for my Grandma and Aunts, there really is no other reason to go back anymore. If you're STILL reading this and STILL wondering who I hung out with, I hung out with Mario gonzales, Mike Rodriguez, Richard Sanchez, Henry Martinex and a few others on Ardilla Street. I still email Felix Fernandez once in a while. I knew a lot o...Expand for more
f people, popular and not-so-popular, it didn't matter much to me. I sort of just dropped off the face of the earth around October 1983, then re-surfaced in like 1985 back in the neighborhood for about a year or so before I joined the Army in November 1986. The reason I disappeared is that my then-girlfriend and I moved in together when our little girl was born and I dropped out of Basset and looked for a job, finally finding a job flipping burgers in El Monte at Big-D burgers on Valley and Durfee. It didn't pay a lot but it was enough and I worked ALOT of hours there. Tried to go back to school for like a month in early 1986 but left again because I was still working and needed to find a way to support my baby and get out of L.A. before I got myself in trouble. Thankfully, I contacted a recruiter and on 12 November 1986, I took my first plane ride and went to Fort Knox, Klan-tucky for Tank Crewman Training. Military Life in a Nutshell!! I Joined the Army in Nov 1986 as an M1 Abrams Tank Crewman. Spent 5 yrs at Ft Riley KS from Mar 87 to Feb 92. While assigned to ft Riley, I deployed to Operation Desert Storm with Rueben Perez and was pleased to see him and Nannette Rojas' love bloom and they eventually married and are still together. From Ft Riley, I went to Germany from Apr 92 till July 94, serving in the 11th ACR at Wildflecken and with 1-1 Cav, 1AD in Buedingen, Germany. Left Germany in July 94 and went to Ft Bliss, El Paso TX serving with the 3rd ACR. Moved with the 3rd ACR to Ft Carson, CO in Nov 95 serving there until June 99. In June 99, I went to Camp Casey, Tong-Du-Chon, Korea and served with "Deuce Tank" 2-72 Armor, 2ID. This was an Unaccompanied tour so my wife and kids stayed in Colorado to wait for me. I Left Korea in July 2000 and we all moved to Ft Hood TX in Aug 00, serving with 1-10 Cav, 4ID until Jan 03. Moved to Germany again in Jan 03 and was assigned to 1-77 Armor, 1ID, the Big Red One in Schweinfurt Germany. I deployed to Iraq as part of OIF II in February of 2004, stationed in Tikrit and performing all sorts of duties that were hazardous to my health :o) I got all my guys home in one piece and we returned to Germany in Feb 2005. I was made the First Sergeant of my Tank Company until leaving in august 2005. We came to Hohenfels, Germany and I was assigned as an Observer/Controller. What that means is I helped to train and "referee" troops during their wargames before they go off to war. I am a Tank Master Gunner and was in charge of a Tank Platoon during OIF II. It's probably a huge shock to those who might remember me but I didnt tun out too bad after all. The Army made me a lot better person and I owe so much to my wife of 20 plus yrs who has been there for me through all the separations without ever losing faith in me or why I do what I do. I am blessed to have been able to serve our country and meet the people I have met, some bad and most good. I have seen many different peoples in some odd places, and tasted some crazy foods in my time but I still would not change my time in the service for anything in La Puente. That's it. Hit me up on email if you want to re-connect or tell me to shorten my story!
